Zootopia, Kubo and the Two Strings lead ANNIE nominations but foreign and indie films The Red Turtle, My Life as a Zucchini and Your Name. play well

Two major Oscar contenders for Animated Feature, Zootopia and Kubo and the Two Strings, led the 44th ANNIE award nominations today with 11 and 10 apiece, respectively.

Joining those in the top category of Best Animated Feature were Finding Dory, Kung Fu Panda 3 and Moana. Independent animated features have a separate category, which makes Oscar predicting here more difficult. That category is made up of My Life as a Zucchini, The Red Turtle, Miss Hokusai, Long Way North and Your Name. Any of those films are equally as competitive in the Oscar race this year. The directing category is where the two merge and where we might be able to find the answers for Oscar we’re looking for.  Zootopia directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore and Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight are nominated alongside three indie/foreign directors: Claude Barras (My Life as a Zucchini), Michael Dudok de Wit (The Red Turtle), and Makoto Shinkai (Your Name.).

Following Zootopia and Kubo and the Two Strings in the main categories are Moana, which earned six nominations; The Red Turtle, with five; Kung Fu Panda 3 and Trollswhich earned four apiece, and Finding Dory and My Life as a Zucchiniwith three apiece.

Last year’s winner, Inside Out, also went on to win the Oscar. In fact, since the inception of the Animated Feature Oscar, all ANNIE Best Animated Feature winners have gone on to Oscar glory except one; Happy Feet beat Cars for the Academy Award in 2001.

And because stats are awesome and we wouldn’t be AW without trotting them out, here are the statistics on the writing and directing categories at the ANNIEs and how they correlate to Oscar nominations.
