2016 INOCA Nominations: Carol and Mad Max Lead with 12 Each
Tons of love went to Carol, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Assassin today at the 8th International Online Cinema Awards (INOCA). Carol and Mad Max: Fury Road lead with a whopping 12 nominations apiece including Best Picture and Best Director with Carol snagging two Best Actress mentions for its leads, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.
The INOCAs are comprised of voters from the AwardsWatch community forums and have been giving out awards since 2002. Previous Best Picture winners have included Under the Skin, Amour, Brokeback Mountain and There Will Be Blood. You can check out the full list of nominees and winners from awards past right here. This year’s INOCAs offer a unique balance of Oscar-friendly fare, foreign films and obscure mentions that make up the truly eclectic group that a community as international as AwardsWatch provides. Some big Oscar hits like The Revenant and Room had to settle for far less than they got from The Academy but that made for a much more open and diverse field of nominees like The Assassin, The Duke of Burgundy, Beasts of No Nation and Son of Saul. Mad Max: Fury Road had the most Oscar-to-INOCA crossover, even improving on its 10 nominations from The Academy by adding two here; Adapted Screenplay and Ensemble Cast (which the Oscar doesn’t have). Brooklyn performed better with INOCA than with the Oscars with seven nominations including one for John Crowley in Best Director. Two of the Oscar frontrunners, Spotlight and The Big Short, managed a measly two and one nomination apiece, respectively.
Independent and little seen films grabbed a big piece of the acting nomination pie with Kristen Stewart in Clouds of Sils Maria, Mya Taylor in Tangerine and Cynthia Nixon in James White taking three spots in Supporting Actress. Rose Byrne’s hilarious turn in last summer’s Spy also landed a supporting nomination there. In the lead categories, Nixon’s co-star Christopher Abbott received a Best Actor nomination and in Best Actress Sidse Babett Knudsen (The Duke of Burgundy) bested Oscar frontrunner Brie Larson (Room) for a mention. Interestingly enough, Larson’s co-star Jacob Tremblay managed a nomination in Best Actor.
In the Adapted Screenplay category, every nominee was for a film that was female-led and while the Original Screenplay had three Oscar nominees it also left room for Clouds of Sils Maria and Mistress America, two more female-led films.
The winners will be revealed next Friday, February 26th. Stay tuned to @awards_watch for details.
