Amazon Studios is once again teaming up with Roadside Attractions after a very successful box office and awards run with Manchester by the Sea last year (the film earned almost $50M and won two Oscars).
Wonderstruck, from director Todd Haynes, will be given a limited release on October 20th and will go wider throughout November. The film is set to world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in just a few weeks where it will compete for the Palme d’Or. Haynes’ previous film, Carol, premiered at Cannes in 2015 and went on to score six Academy Award nominations.
If the October 20th sounds familiar it’s because it’s the very same weekend that Best Picture Oscar winner Moonlight debuted on last year. In fact, it shouldn’t come as any surprise to seasoned awards watchers that the last four Best Picture winners all debuted in October. That weekend date is particularly shrewd as the bloodbath weekend before is packed at the moment; Bleecker Street’s Breathe, Fox Searchlight’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Universal’s The Snowman, Open Road Films’ Marshall and Paramount’s mother! are all set for the October 13th.
Wonderstruck, based on the children’s book by Brian Selznick, tells the its story in two timelines; one of a young boy in the Midwest and the other a tale about a young girl in New York from fifty years ago as they both seek the same mysterious connection. The film reunites Haynes with his greatest muse, Julianne Moore (Safe, Far From Heaven) and co-stars Oscar-nominee Michelle Williams, Oakes Fegley (Pete’s Dragon) and newcomer Millicent Simmonds.
Right now, the Gold Rush Gang has Wonderstruck and Haynes at #1 for Best Picture and Best Director as well as Julianne Moore in Supporting Actress and Adapted Screenplay.
