1091 Pictures announced today it has acquired North American distribution rights to the feature thriller Runt. The film tells the story of a group of neglected and misguided high-school seniors who are pulled into a downward cycle of violence as all of the adults in their lives fail to be engaged or helpful when needed. The film stars Cameron Boyce (Disney Channel’s Descendants franchise, HBO’s Mrs. Fletcher), who passed away in 2019 at the age of 20.
Runt also stars Nicole Elizabeth Berger (Clover), Aramis Knight (Into The Badlands), Brianna Hildebrand (Deadpool, Trinkets), Cyrus Arnold (8-BIT Christmas, Just Beyond), Jason Patric (Rush), Charlie Gillespie (Julie and The Phantoms) and Tichina Arnold (The Last Black Man in San Francisco). The film marks the directorial debut of William Coakley, based on a script by Coakley, Christian Van Gregg, and Armand Constantine. Runt will be released in theaters and on digital platforms this fall.
Runt made its world premiere at the 2020 Mammoth Film Festival where it received the Audience Award, as well as a standing ovation. Boyce plays Cal, a high-school teenager, who after a troubling incident takes a stand resulting in devastating consequences. The story addresses topics of bullying, unsupervised youth, and the senselessness of gun violence. Runt, a Wagging Tails Production, is produced by Carl Rumbaugh of Calvin Productions and Gregory Thomas of ElevenXI.
“Cameron was incredibly proud of this film. We believe his powerful performance will resonate deeply with all of his fans,” said Victor and Libby Boyce, parents of Cameron Boyce. “This film is very important in the climate we live in today. The message parallels the issue of gun violence and stresses the importance of helping people find peaceful outlets.”
“We are grateful to be working with 1091 Pictures, who immediately responded to this young and talented cast and understand the relevance and power of this story,” said the producers of Runt. “We have also partnered with The Cameron Boyce Foundation and its Wielding Peace initiative to promote peace instead of violence and spread awareness of the consequences of gun violence. We are excited for audiences to see this powerful and thrilling picture.”
“We love everything about this film,” said 1091’s head of content Eric Min. “It’s a challenge to take on such important and difficult subject matters but the cast delivers dynamic, true to life performances and the narrative takes you on an intense rollercoaster ride of emotions that offers perspective to help continue the conversation. We’re proud to present this film to audiences.”
The deal was negotiated for 1091 Pictures by Lev Avery-Peck and by Janne Barklis of Gersh on behalf of the filmmakers.
