2014 César Award Winners: ‘Timbuktu,’ Kristen Stewart Win French Film’s Top Prizes
The Césars, the French version of the Oscars gave their prizes out today and the Oscar-nominated Timbuktu was the big winner, grabbing seven awards including Best Film and Best Director for Abderrahmane Sissako. Kristen Stewart made history, twice, by becoming the first American to be nominated and then to win a César for her supporting work in Clouds of Sils Maria. In the battle for Best Actor of the Yves Saint Laurent films, Pierre Niney (Yves Saint Laurent) upset favorite Gaspard Ulliel (Saint Laurent) for the prize. Although the latter entered with the most nominations, Best Costumes was the only award it won. Xavier Dolan’s Mommy beat out Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel and last year’s Oscar Best Picture winner, 12 Years a Slave, for Best Foreign Film. Sean Penn was the winner of this year’s Honorary César.
