2014 EMMYS: By the Numbers (Hint: Sherlock and Breaking Bad Kicked Ass)
Although Breaking Bad was the big winner in the regular series categories with six, it was the TV Movie Sherlock: His Last Vow that became the big Emmy winner of the night, with seven. After a strong showing at the Creative Arts Emmys last weekend where it picked up a field-best four wins, it snagged another three last night for Writing, Lead Actor (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Supporting Actor (Martin Freeman). The wins came as a surprise to most predictors who had the men from Fargo and The Normal Heart out ahead in those races. True Detective only managed one Primetime Emmy win (for Directing) but still did well at the Creative Arts Emmys to come home with five for the night.
Modern Family only managed three wins but when one of those is your 5th consecutive Comedy Series wins, who’s counting? Orange is the New Black was sent to hole with no dinner.
HBO went into the night with a record-setting 99 nominations and came away with 19 wins, the best of any network. CBS and NBC didn’t fare too poorly with 13 and 11, respectively, showing that network television isn’t quite dead yet.
