Film Independent, the nonprofit arts organization that produces the Film Independent Spirit Awards, the Los Angeles Film Festival and Film Independent at LACMA, announced nominations for the 2015 Spirit Awards this morning. Film Independent President Josh Welsh presided over the press conference held at the W Hollywood, with actors Rosario Dawson and Diego Luna presenting the nominations. Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of was the big winner this morning with a field-best six nominations (including Best Feature). , Nightcrawler, were close behind with five apiece and Whiplash came in with four. All four were also nominated for Best Feature.
Lots of surprises, as is par for the course at the Spirit Awards, with Weinstein’s push for The Imitation Game’s eligibility not paying off at all. Not a single mention, even for International Film. Interestingly enough, a film that he virtually abandoned early this year, The Immigrant, nabbed two nominations, including one for Marion Cotillard in Lead Female. Sony Pictures Classics fared the best of any studio, snagging 15 nominations including Julianne Moore (Still Alice) and Tilda Swinton (Only Lovers Left Alive) in Female Lead and the Special Distinction award to Foxcatcher. The film wasn’t eligible for individual awards but was feted here. Also ineligible for individual awards but still finding itself awarded today was Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice. It received the Robert Altman, which is given to one film’s director, casting director and ensemble cast. The Robert Altman Award was created in 2008 in honor of legendary director Robert Altman who was known for creating extraordinary ensemble casts.
The screenplay category provided the biggest snubs of the day with two frontrunners, Birdman and Boyhood, not receiving nominations. Nor Selma, despite Director and Feature nods. Instead Only Lovers Left Alive and Big Eyes (its sole mention) were the surprise nominees there.
Winners will be announced at the Spirit Awards on Saturday, February 21, 2015. The awards ceremony will be held as a daytime luncheon in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica. This year the show will broadcast live exclusively on IFC at 2:00 PM PT/ 5:00 PM ET.
