The Online Film Critics Society (OFCS) has revealed its nominations and they’re kind of amazing. Making LA and NY look pretty pedestrian by comparison, the OFCS have opted for some exciting choices in Best Picture like Under the Skin, Mommy, Nightcrawler and Two Days, One Night. Boyhood is still a strong leader in these nominations (as the film has been at all groups so far) with six nominations. Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, which has made a healthy presence early in this awards season, also faired very well here, also grabbing six nominations.
The Canadian Oscar entry Mommy, from Cannes winning wunderkind Xavier Dolan, received mentions in Best Picture, Best Film Not in the English Language, Best Actress (Anne Dorval) and Best Supporting Actress (Suzanne Clément). Two Days, One Night, the Belgian entry for the Foreign Language Film Oscar, came out with five nominations this morning including Best Picture and Best Film Not in the English Language (like Mommy) along with Best Director for the Dardenne brothers, Best Actress for Marion Cotillard (who’s having an amazing critics awards season so far) and Best Original Screenplay.
Interestingly, for as non-Oscary as this list is, the Best Supporting Actor nominations here are very likely to be the exact same five that end up nominated on Oscar morning. The Best Actress category is probably the most exciting with the aforementioned Cotillard and Dorval but also Julianne Moore (Still Alice), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) and Essie Davis (The Babadook). Considering how well Under the Skin performed though, it is a bit surprising that Scarlett Johansson missed out here.
