2014 Tony Nominations: Hedwig in; Bridges and Michelle Williams Snubbed

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder and the revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch starring Emmy winner and previous Tony host Neil Patrick Harris led the 2014 Tony nominations this morning with 10 and 8 apiece, respectively. 6-time Emmy winner and Tony winner Tyne Daly and 5-time Tony winner Audra Macdonald return to compete against each in for Best Leading Actress in a Play with another Tony winner, Cherry Jones. Best Leading Actress in a Musical should see a juicy fight between Broadway vets Idina Menzel (Tony winner for Wicked) and 2-time Tony winner Sutton Foster.

Some surprising snubs this morning came from the omissions of The Bridges of Madison County in Best Musical, Michelle Williams’s turn as Sally Bowles in Cabaret for Best Leading Actress in a Musical and Daniel Radcliffe, snubbed yet again, this time for The Cripple of Inishmaan. Also missing were Oscar and Tony winner Denzel Washington for A Raisin in the Sun as well as the team of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan, who both pulled double duty this season, performing in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot and Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land.

The 68th annual Tony Awards, with Tony host Hugh Jackman, will be telecast live on CBS on June 8.
