2015 Oscars: 79 Original Songs Eligible for 87th Academy Awards

The LEGO Movie‘s “Everything is Awesome,” one of 79 Eligible Original Song Oscar Contenders

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences have announced that 79 songs are eligible for the Original Song Oscar at the 87th Academy Awards, up just a bit from 75 last year. That is, barring another “Alone, Yet Not Alone” controversy. But with Christian Mingle: The Movie with no submitted songs, that’s probably not happening. There is a song called “Something to Shoot For” from a film called Hot Guys with Guns (apparently a gay Lethal Weapon) that has my curiosity piqued though.

As usual there are lots of animated films submitting songs, sometimes multiple songs (Rio 2 submitted four) but a maximum of two songs per film are allowed. We’ll see if those multiple submission work for or against those films.

The full list, with links to the songs where available.
