HBO’s The Leftovers topped the 2016 AW Emmy nominations today with a total of 10 including three acting mentions, Drama Series and Program of the Year. Critics darling You’re the Worst from FXX blew up, scoring nine, the best for any comedy series this year.
For the nominating process, AwardsWatch’s forums used the Emmy submission ballot as their guide with a few exceptions. Horace and Pete, for example, is submitted in Drama Series at the Emmys but here is in Limited Series. That paid off well for the show as four of Horace and Pete‘s seven nominations came from the acting categories where Steve Buscemi and Louis C.K. both scored Leading Actor noms and Edie Falco and Laurie Metcalf both made it into Supporting Actress.
As with any awards there are great, sometimes shocking, surprises – both good and bad. Using a ranking system for nominations, sometimes using the strategy of putting a longer shot at #1 while omitting a ‘safe’ nominee might pay off. One of the biggest snubs of the day came in Leading Actress in a Comedy Series where Julia Louis-Dreyfus was snubbed despite her show grabbing seven nominations, including Comedy Series and Program of the Year.
First season shows made a splash this year with Mr. Robot, UnREAL, Horace and Pete and Marvel’s Jessica Jones all besting more established programs for some top nominations. Sense8, from Netflix, scored two acting nominations; Doona Bae in Supporting Actress and Miguel Angel Silvestre in Supporting Actor. AW Emmy favorites were no slouches though as Game of Thrones came through with six nominations including two for Directing (for the season’s final two eps) and Writing (for the season finale). The Americans and The Leftovers both hit today(the former won Program of the Year last year) but favorites last year like Better Call Saul and Transparent underperformed in the face of stiff competition. Broad City managed just two nominations but one of them was Program of the Year despite not getting in for Comedy Series. Person of Interest shocked by being nominated in Writing and Directing for its season finale but nowhere else.
Winners will be announced Thursday, July 14th.

Disgraceful Person of Interest wasn't nominated in more categories. Obviously one of the best shows in TV drama history - hampered by the fact CBS cheaped out and only ordered 13 eps of its final season. Amy Acker is in a league of her own with regard to top female in drama series and Sarah B. Shahi isn't far behind. Jim Caviezel and especially Michael Emerson deserved best actor in drama nominees. POI Music also deserves recognition.
But Acker is the big missing person. Almost akin to not nominating Meryl Streep as top film actress for last 40 years of cinema. Acker is just that good.
