Whenever you think you want to start feeling comfortable about the Oscar race, don’t. The BAFTAs just came by to lay waste to dreams and brings others back from the dead. After a less than stellar start in the race, Bridge of Spies came roaring back not only scoring Best Film and Director mentions but ending up tying for the top nomination scorer with nine. Carol, after being snubbed by the Producers Guild, came back too with top noms in Film, Director, Actress (Cate Blanchett), Supporting Actress (Rooney Mara) and Adapted Screenplay. It also ended up with nine. Right behind was The Revenant with eight and one of the big stories of the announcement was The Big Short in Film and Director. It wound up with five total.

Alicia Vikander scored double nominations; one in Leading for The Danish Girl and one in Supporting for Ex Machina. Supporting Actress also gave love to Rooney Mara (Carol), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Julie Walters (Brooklyn) Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs) Best Actress found room for Brie Larson (Room), Cate Blanchett (Carol), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) and Maggie Smith (The Lady in the Van) but shockingly snubbed Charlotte Rampling in 45 Years.

The biggest snub of the day fell on Mad Max: Fury Road. After the most successful run of any film so far it was stopped dead in its tracks at BAFTA. Despite scoring seven nominations in technical categories it was left off the Film and Director lists.

The BAFTA winners will be announced on February 14th.
