After Game of Thrones swept the first night of the 2016 Creative Arts Emmys last night, they took a break from tonight’s awards which was focus primarily on Documentary, Reality, Short-form, and Non-Fiction programming.

One of the most talked about, water-cooler shows of 2016, Netflix’s Making a Murderer, made a killing at tonight’s Creative Arts Emmys with four wins. The doc series is set for a second season but with no official date yet. The huge musical hit Grease Live! rocked the awards with four awards including one of the top awards of the night, Special Class Program. It bested Emmy favorite, the Kennedy Center Honors for the win.

The biggest shock of the night, and such a great one, was RuPaul Charles winning Outstanding Reality Host for his long-running drag competition show RuPaul’s Drag Race. RuPaul had made waves earlier this year about having never been nominated (nor the show) and that he didn’t need an Emmy to legitimize him or the show. That anti-campaigning paid off in a nomination in July and now a win tonight.

Another surprise was James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke beating very formidable competition in the form of Beyoncé’s Lemonade and Adele’s live performance in New York City. Corden is now a Tony and Emmy winner, halfway to EGOT.

Tune in next week for the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards for all of the top categories.
