The first nominations of the 2016-2017 awards season have kicked off with the Gotham Award nominations by the Independent Film Project and this year is looking especially Oscar-y.

Kenneth Lonergan’s Manchester by the Sea picked up four nominations: Best Feature, Best Actor (Casey Affleck), Best Screenplay (Kenneth Lonergan) and Breakthrough Actor (Lucas Hedges). The IFP doesn’t have a Best Director category (only for Breakthrough).

Moonlight’s ensemble

Moonlight picked up two nominations, including Best Feature but also picked up a special Gotham Jury Award for ensemble performance given by the 2016 Best Actor/Best Actress and Breakthrough Actor nominating panels, saying the “actors at all levels of experience give outstanding performances that speak eloquently to one another both within and across each chapter of the story.” The awards will go to actors Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, Alex Hibbert, André Holland, Jharrel Jerome, Janelle Monáe, Jaden Piner, Trevante Rhodes, and Ashton Sanders.

Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson performed strongly with three nominations, including Best Feature and Best Actor (Adam Driver). The Breakthrough Director category saw the helmers of highly respected indies like Krisha, The Witch and Swiss Army Man get recognition.

The main acting categories feature performances deep in many pundits’ Oscar predictions this year including both leads from Loving, Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga, the previously mentioned Affleck, and in Best Actress we have Natalie Portman in Jackie, Annette Bening in 20th Century Women and Isabelle Huppert in Elle. Jeff Bridges was nominated for Hell or High Water but will compete in supporting for most if not all awards this season (the Gothams don’t have a supporting category). Craig Robinson (Morris for America) also earned a Best Actor nomination and Love & Friendship‘s Kate Beckinsale was nominated for Best Actress.

The 2016 Gotham Awards ceremony is November 28th at Cipriani Wall Street in downtown Manhattan.
