A few years ago, The Academy and its producers decided that cutting the presentation of the Honorary Oscars at the annual Academy Awards was a time and cost-cutting measure in an effort to trim down a show that is often ridiculed for its long running time. These awards are now given out in a separate ceremony held in November but not televised. For the casual viewer these were often seen as the ‘bathroom break’ moments but for true Oscarwatchers they were as important as the other awards. Recognizing the careers and talent of oft-unrewarded people in the industry is where you’ll find the majority of recipients of Honorary Oscars. Lauren Bacall, Maureen O’Hara, Peter O’Toole, Angela Lansbury – all multi-nominated stars that never won competitive Oscars but get their due here. The Governors Awards aren’t limited to actors; also recognized is every facet of filmmaking from documentarians to casting agents to stuntmen to editors, as this year’s group shows.

Please enjoy Oscar winners (and Oscar hopefuls this year) Tom Hanks, Helen Mirren, Nicole Kidman, Jeff Bridges and more as they honor the 2016 Governors Awards recipients Anne Coates, Frederick Wiseman, Jackie Chan and Lynn Stalmaster which was held on Saturday, November 12th at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland in Hollywood, CA, in its entirety.
