2016 Television Critics Association Nominations: Mr. Robot and The People vs. O.J. Simpson Lead

It was a good morning for FX and HBO as the two networks took the lion’s share of nominations from the 32nd Television Critics Association with 11 and 12, respectively. The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story grabbed four of those FX nominations (two for Individual Achievement in Drama – for Sarah Paulson and Courtney B. Vance, Achievement in Movies, Miniseries or Specials and Program of the Year) and The Americans continued to do well with the TCA, this year earning nominations for Keri Russell, Achievement in Drama and Program of the Year. FX also pulled in nominations for Fargo in Achievement in Movies, Miniseries or Specials and Program of the Year and two for You’re the Worst.

But it’s freshman show Mr. Robot that came away with the most nominations for a single series, with four. Individual Achievement in Drama (Rami Malek), Achievement in Drama, New Program and Program of the Year all came to the USA show this morning, mirroring some of AMC’s haul for Better Call Saul last year. That show’s freshman season won New Program and repeated its Individual Achievement in Drama nomination.

Elsewhere, Individual Achievement in Comedy was dominated by women (5/6 nominations) with Rachel Bloom earning a nod after winning a Golden Globe for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend earlier this year. UnREAL‘s first season broke big, snagging mentions in New Program, Achievement in Drama and Program of the Year. No comedies made the Program of the Year list this year; dramas, dramatic limited series’ and the Netflix doc Making a Murderer dominated the group’s top category.

Many winners from last year didn’t make the cut for nominations this year including Amy Schumer and her self-titled show, which won two awards last year and Empire, which very surprisingly won Program of the Year.

Twin Peaks is up for the Heritage Award yet again. The show has become the Susan Lucci of this category and probably won’t win until next year when the sequel/reboot hits Showtime.

“TCA members have recognized a record number of first-time nominees for this year’s awards. In our 32-year history this is one of the most diverse slates of genres and programs we’ve ever had,” TCA President, Amber Dowling, said in a statement. “It’s been a banner year for fresh, noteworthy content and we’re looking forward to seeing which shows and actors grab top prizes following the difficult votes ahead.”

The 32nd TCA Awards ceremony will be held August 6th at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles with Jane the Virgin’s Jaime Camil is set to host..
