2016 Tony Nominations: ‘Hamilton’ Breaks Record with 16

The 2016 Tony Nominations were announced today and to no one’s surprise Hamilton came out on top as the nomination leader with 16. What most didn’t predict though is that it would break the 15-nominations totals of The Producers and Billy Elliot. Currently, The Producers hold the Tony record for wins with 12. Hamilton would need to win every category it’s nominated it (including all four acting) in order to beat that.

In non-Hamilton nominations, the Actress in a Leading Role in a Play is chock-full of film and television stars, including two Oscar winners and also a previous Tony winner. Jessica Lange, a two-time Oscar winner and three-time Emmy winner, earned her first Tony nomination this morning for the revival of Long Day’s Journey Into Night. Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o earned her first Tony nomination this morning for Eclipsed, her first Broadway production. Oscar nominee Michelle Williams found Tony love for the first time today with Blackbird and Sophie Okenedo, who earned a Tony in 2014 for A Raisin in the Sun, is nominating again this year. Rounding out that category, Emmy winner Laurie Metcalf was nominated for Misery.

The 2016 Tony Awards, will be broadcast live on CBS June 12th from the Beacon Theatre at 8 p.m. EST and be hosted by James Corden.
