La La Land has won the 2016 Grolsch People’s Choice Award at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. It went in as the frontrunner to win here and is the Oscar Best Picture frontrunner at the moment. Lion was the first runner-up and in a bit of a surprise, Queen of Katwe was the second runner-up. Moonlight and A Monster Calls were favored as possible winners or runners-up. Jackie won the Platform Award and the People’s Choice for Documentary and Midnight Madness film went to I Am Not Your Negro and Free Fire, respectively.
The Toronto International Festival’s Grolsch People’s Choice Award, which is based on popular vote by festival filmgoers, has often translated into major Oscar success. Since 2008 The Imitation Game, 12 Years a Slave, The King’s Speech, Precious, Slumdog Millionaire, Silver Linings Playbook, Dallas Buyers Club and last year’s winner, Room, all went on to become Best Picture Oscar nominees with four of them winning the top award. Room, Silver Linings Playbook and Dallas Buyer’s Club all won Oscars for their leads.
La La Land is set for US release by Lionsgate and Summit on December 2nd. The Weinstein Company will release Lion on November 23rd for Thanksgiving weekend, Disney‘s Queen of Katwe comes out September 23rd and Fox Searchlight will release the newly acquired Jackie on December 9th.
