2017 Creative Arts Emmys: Stranger Things, Westworld, The Night Of Top Winners

Last night’s Creative Arts Emmys focused on Variety, Reality and Non-Fiction programming. Tonight got into the meaty stuff; Drama, Comedy and Limited Series. This is where we sometimes see a frontrunner emerge in the Drama Series race. But a dominant winner here doesn’t always mean a free ride to Drama Series at the Primetime Emmys. For Game of Thrones the last two years it has but for Boardwalk Empire’s first season, it dominated the Creative Arts Emmys only to miss out on the top award.

Veep kicked things off with a win for Comedy Series Casting, its third in a row. The Emmy winning comedy won two more throughout the evening. Hugh Laurie was not one of them and the 10-time Emmy nominated actor went home empty-handed once again. Master of None, The Ranch, Shameless, The Big Bang Theory and Mozart in the Jungle were the other comedies to find Emmy wins tonight, with one apiece.

It was a fantastic tug of war in both the Drama and Limited Series categories, as expected. In Drama, Stranger Things and Westworld came out on top with five wins apiece. Stranger Things took casting, sound editing and picture editing, main title design and main title music. Westworld came away with sound mixing, makeup, hairstyling, visual effects and interactive media. The Crown and The Handmaid’s Tale were behind with two and three apiece but for the latter a big win came in the Guest Actress in a Drama Series where Alexis Bledel triumphed. Interestingly, all Drama Series nominees won at least one award tonight: House of Cards won for music, Better Call Saul for Short Form and Gerald McRaney won the Guest Actor in a Drama Series Emmy for This Is Us. These awards can give great momentum going into next week’s Primetime Emmys but since no one show overly dominated it really makes what’s winning the top prizes still up in the air.

In Limited Series it seemed like we were going to hear nothing but Big Little Lies and Feud: Bette and Joan all night and they did both win awards, three and two apiece, respectively. Big Little Lies picked up the inaugural Music Supervision award as well as casting and costumes. Feud won hairstyling and makeup but shockingly lost both main title design and main title music to Stranger Things. But it was HBO’s The Night Of which snuck in and grabbed a field best four Emmys tonight. Cinematography, picture editing and both sound awards went to the moody thriller, putting in good shape for a possible upset next week.

And edited version of this weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys will air on FXX next Saturday the 16th, the day before the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards which will air live on CBS at 8pm ET/PT. Click here to see last night’s winners.
