We’re just about a week away from the announcement of the nine finalists for Foreign Language Film so this will be our last predictions for the shortlist. Israel’s Foxtrot still leads our chart to make that shortlist with Russia’s Loveless and France’s BPM remaining in 2nd and 3rd place. Sweden’s The Square makes a considerable move from #8 to #4 this month, bumping Angelina Jolie’s Cambodian submission First They Killed My Father just outside the top 5, swapping places with Germany’s In the Fade. Lebanon’s The Insult also takes a bit of a fall and South Africa (The Wound) and Chile (A Fantastic Woman) round out the top 9.
Something to note: Palestine’s Wajib sits just outside the chart at #10 right now. Considering that last year at this time President Trump’s travel ban in part pushed Iran’s submission The Salesman all the way to an Oscar win and the entire body of the Academy votes on the winner here there might be some interesting results between the Israeli and Palestinian entries. Definitely something to keep an eye on this season if Wajib makes the cut.
