Call Me By Your Name‘s Michael Stuhlbarg may still have a solid hold on the #1 spot (where he’s never left since predictions began back in March) but Will Poulter (Detroit) and Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water) took their respective #14 and #15 debuts last month and skyrocket up to #5 (Shannon) and #6 (Poulter). Understandable as Shannon is clearly an Academy favorite (twice being the sole nomination for his films) and Poulter has received ‘best in show’ reviews for his performance as a vicious, racist cop. I’m predicting a big change next month though, with Shannon holding strong but Poulter collapsing under the weight of the backlash of his film.
There are two debuts on the chart this month, with one of them being a major one. Oscar winner Mark Rylance in Dunkirk (the current #1 in Best Picture and Best Director) jumps from the Other Contenders list all the way up to #6 on the strength of his film’s reviews, box office and his own previous Oscar win. Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins makes his first mark on the chart with The Shape of Water.
Elsewhere is a sea of blood red with no less than 10 performances seeing some drop in ranking. Laurence Fishburne (Last Flag Flying) is spared though as he actually moves up one to enter the top 3.
Here are the 2018 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actor for August from the Gold Rush Gang. Keep an eye on all of the Gold Rush Gang’s 2018 Oscar predictions updated LIVE throughout the month.
Green – moves up from last month
Red – moves down from last month
Blue – debut/new entry
