Melissa Leo (Novitiate) holds onto the top spot for the third month in a row (with a perfect score, no less) but the big stories lie with Holly Hunter in The Big Sick who makes a huge jump from debuting at #11 last month to landing at #2. The Oscar-winning actress has the scene-stealing role in The Big Sick, the critically acclaimed summer box office sleeper that also stars Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan and Ray Romano. Hunter hasn’t been Oscar-nominated since 2003’s Thirteen where she was the film’s sole nomination. Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water) also makes good on her debut last month and the Oscar-winning actress plants herself in the top 5 for August.
Two actresses are making note-worthy rebounds this month; Hong Chau (Downsizing) and Juno Temple (Wonder Wheel). For Chau, her climb is coming as her film will be hitting the major fall festivals, including opening Venice. There is still some hesitation from the Gold Rush Gang for the film itself after the very mixed responses from its multiple test screenings but Paramount is said to be making a major push for Chau for awards season. For Temple, she fell off the chart last month but comes roaring back with a pair of high-placed rankings. With word that Kate Winslet’s performance is ‘Blue Jasmine-esque’ we could see Temple be to Winslet was Sally Hawkins was to Cate Blanchett.
Here are the 2018 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actress for August from the Gold Rush Gang. Keep an eye on all of the Gold Rush Gang’s 2018 Oscar predictions updated LIVE throughout the month.
Green – moves up from last month
