BAFTA nominations will be announced at 7:25am GMT – that’s 11:25pm and 2:25am for the west and east coast of the US, respectively.
I fully expect The Favourite to clear double digits and be the nomination leader. I’m predicting 13, hitting nearly every category save Sound, Special Visual Effects and Music. I think Nicholas Hoult could sneak in here and I’m predicting he will over Timothée Chalamet in Beautiful Boy. But then, it could just as easily be Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman) or Sam Elliott (A Star Is Born) that he bumps.
It’s also inevitable that BAFTA will go radio gaga over Bohemian Rhapsody, giving the film even more momentum after its Golden Globe win on Sunday and Oscar nomination voting beginning yesterday. Although I don’t think they’d go as far as to nominate disgraced director Bryan Singer, I’m not completely counting it out. I think the film will hit at least nine categories, including Best Film and most of the techs. If there’s a surprise nom out of (besides Singer, obviously), Lucy Boynton might shock and bump someone major out.
Other surprise nominations could come from Jonathan Pryce (The Wife) in Supporting Actor or Pawel Pawlikowski (Cold War) in Best Director. I’m really torn on what to do with Vice and Green Book. Green Book feels like a super basic and palatable nominee for BAFTA and might be a bigger competitor were it not for Bohemian Rhapsody taking both the basic flag and the homegrown hero one.
It feels crazy to predict John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman) when you consider that his father, Denzel Washington, has never been nominated by BAFTA. Ever. Not even for his Oscar-winning roles. It would be wild to see his son get in first but, in reality, BlacKkKlansman is a much stronger film overall than most of the elder Washington’s efforts. If JDW misses, and he very well could, it’s likely to be for Joaquin Phoenix in You Were Never Really Here.
Here are my predictions for the 2019 EE British Film Academy Awards. Check back tonight for the nominations.
