2019 BAFTAs: ‘Roma’ nabs Best Film, Director; ‘The Favourite’ leads with most wins

Alfonso Cuarón intimate epic Roma, which he directed, wrote, edited and shot, has won the 2019 BAFTA for Best Film. It also picked up wins for Director, Cinematography and Film Not in the English Language.

Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Favourite was the big winner of the evening though, taking seven wins of its field-best 12 nominations including Leading Actress (Olivia Colman), Supporting Actress (Rachel Weisz) and Original Screenplay.

Last year, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri pulled off big wins in Best Film, British Film, Leading Actress and Supporting Actor and repeated those acting wins at the Oscars.

Bohemian Rhapsody picked up two wins: Leading Actor for Rami Malek (after winning the Golden Globe and SAG) and Sound. Mahershala Ali won Supporting Actor for Green Book and BlacKkKlansman won Adapted Screenplay. They were the first BAFTA wins for Ali and writer/director Spike Lee. BAFTA spread the wealth some more with single wins for A Star Is Born (Original Music) and Vice (Editing).

The A Star Is Born win makes the Oscars’ Original Score category an even tougher race to call now. BAFTA doesn’t have an Original Song category, hence it being called Original Music, so a film like A Star Is Born with nearly 20 original songs (but no original score) is able to find itself an easy win here. The Oscars have two separate categories for songs and score where the competition is strong between BlacKkKlansman, Black Panther and If Beale Street Could Talk. BAFTA and the Oscars match Original Music/Original Score 4/5 with ASIB here and Black Panther at the Oscars.

Letitia Wright (Black Panther, Black Mirror) was given the EE Rising Star Award, the only award voted on by the UK public.

As previously announced, Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley will receive the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award. They’ve been responsible for films like The Crying Game and Interview with the Vampire. Thelma Schoonmaker will be honoured with the BAFTA Fellowship. Schoonmaker is a BAFTA winner for Goodfellas and a three-time Film Editing Oscar winner for Raging Bull, The Aviator and The Departed.
