2019 Cannes: ‘Invisible Life of Eurídice,’ ‘The Climb,’ ‘Joan of Arc’ among Un Certain Regard winners
The President and jury of the Un Certain Regard section of the 2019 Cannes Film Festival have announced their winners.
Karim Aïnouz’s The Invisible Life of Eurídice was awarded the top prize by the jury, led by president Cannes-winning director Nadine Labaki (Capernaum). Other winners included Best Director going to Kantamir Balagov (who was a UCR jury member last year) for Beanpole (Une Grande Fille), Chiara Mastroianni for Best Performance (any gender) for Christophe Honoré’s Chambre 212 (On a Magical Night) and a special mention for Bruno Dumont’s Jeanne (Joan of Arc).
The jury, comprised of Marina Foïs (actress, France), Nurhan Sekerci-Porst (producer, Germany), Lisandro Alonso (director, Argentina) and Lukas Dhont (director, Belgium), released this statement:
“The Jury would like to express the great pleasure we had diving into the diversity of this selection. This on many levels: on the subjects, on the way cinematic tools were used and on the portrayal of its characters. It was very stimulating to have seen, side by side, filmmakers that master their language so well and others still finding their way to mastery. It was a nice surprise to see 9 first features in the Un Certain Regard Official Selection. We were honored to be transported into all these different universes.
World cinema remains very much alive and in good shape!”
