2019 Emmys: Supporting Actress in a Limited Series/TV Movie

Sharp Objects may have aired almost a year ago, but Patricia Clarkson’s remain the frontrunner to win Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress. This was cemented earlier in the year when Clarkson won both a Golden Globe and Critic’s Choice Award. Factor in her SAG Award nomination—keeping in mind they only have one category for both lead and supporting and she looks really good for a nomination. Clarkson is at a career best in Sharp Objects and will be tough to beat.

With Clarkson almost assured of a nomination that leaves only five spots open. Let’s take a look at who’s most likely to try and stop her.

Poisoned Murderess

Eliza Scanlen, Sharp Objects

Scalen is a relative newcomer but she makes a big impact in Sharp Objects. But, Scalen more than holds her own with her more famous co-stars Amy Adams and Clarkson.

Her! Again?

• Patricia Arquette, The Act
• Julia Garner, Dirty John

Arquette, is possibly the Best Limited Series Actress frontrunner for Escape at Dannemora but she could receive a second nomination for her wicked control freak mother who is abusing her daughter with Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Garner looks good to receive a nomination for Best Drama Supporting Actress for Ozark. Garner could receive a second nomination as the title-characters would-be victim. If Garner, receives a surprise nomination in this category it could prove she’s a formidable challenger to win for Ozark.

How Much do they love the Series?

• Lily Collins, Les Misérables
• Margaret Qualley, Fosse/Verdon

Collins, gives a career best performance as the tragic victim but she has to deal with the inevitable comparisons to Anne Hathaway’s Oscar winning performance. Qualley’s co-stars Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams are all but assured a nomination. But Fosse/Verdon hasn’t given its supporting players much of a chance to stand out. Adding to Qualley’s problems is she only appears in the later episodes of Fosse/Verdon. Collins and Qualley will need to hope the academy are big fans of their respective series.

The British Invasion

• Carmen Ejogo, True Detective
• Emma Thompson, King Lear
• Emily Watson, Chernobyl

Watson is part of the large ensemble cast of Chernobyl she’s still looking for her first Emmy nomination. Ejogo, more than holds her own with her onscreen husband played by Mahershala Ali. However, only the detectives have received Emmy nominations for season one. Thompson is on the verge of her career resurgence but it’s hard to see King Lear getting much love beyond Anthony Hopkins.

When They See the Emmys

Vera Farmiga

When They See Us, remains unknown since it doesn’t premier till May 31st. Should the series become a major competitor. Farmiga stars as the prosecutor in the Central Park Five’s wrongful conviction.

DOA or Deadwood:

• Anna Gunn
• Kim Dickens
• Robin Weigert

Wegiert, reprises her Emmy-nominated role as Calamity Jane. Weigert was the only actress from the original series to receive a nomination. Dickens, found post-Deadwood success staring in everything from Gone Girl, House of Cards and Fear the Walking Dead—but she’s still has yet to receive an Emmy nomination. Gunn, post-Deadwood went on to win two Emmys for Breaking Bad. The cast of Deadwood, is arguably the most successful post-show of all of HBO’s series and the television academy might want to celebrate these actresses return to the wild west.
