2019 IFP Gotham Awards: 'Marriage Story' sweeps with 3; Awkwafina named Best Actress for 'The Farewell'

Netflix’s Marriage Story swept the 2019 IFP Gotham Awards tonight, winning all three categories it was nominated for: Best Feature, Best Actor (Adam Driver) and Best Screenplay (Noah Baumbach).

The New York-Los Angeles divorce drama, loosely based on Baumbach’s own life, also won the IFP Gotham Audience Award, which was chosen among the 15 films nominated for Best Feature, Best Documentary or the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award. In one of his speeches, Baumbach was tongue-tied to express his gratitude. “I usually write things down,” he remarked. He thanked Netflix profusely, especially for rescuing New York’s Paris Theater where Marriage Story has been playing for the last month.

The Farewell‘s Awkwafina accepted the Best Actress honor and was shocked by the win. “I never won anything. I can’t even win an argument in the Instagram comments,” she quipped in her speech thanking director Lulu Wang.

Taylor Russell (Waves) won the Breakthrough Performer award, which was accepted by her co-star Kelvin Harrison, Jr. A surprise win came in the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award which went to Laure De Clermont-Tonnerre for The Mustang, besting Olivia Wilde for Booksmart and Joe Talbot for The Last Black Man in San Francisco.

On the television side, When They See Us and PEN15 won the Long and Short form programming awards.

Ava DuVernay (Director tribute), Laura Dern (Actress tribute), Sam Rockwell (Actor tribute) and Glen Basner (Industry tribute) received the 2019 tributes of the evening.
