2019 Oscar Nominations: ‘The Favourite,’ ‘Roma’ lead with 10 each; ‘A Star Is Born,’ ‘Vice’ with 8

ROMA and The Favourite lead the 2019 Oscar nominations for the 91st Academy Awards with 10 apiece. A Star Is Born and Vice followed with 8 each.

Actor-comedian and Oscar^®–nominated writer Kumail Nanjiani and actress–producer–director Tracee Ellis Ross announced the 91st Oscars^® nominations today (January 22), live from the Academy’s headquarters in Beverly Hills via a global live stream on Oscar.com, Oscars.org, the Academy’s digital platforms, a satellite feed and broadcast media.

Oscar nominations would be nothing were it not for their shocks and snubs and this morning certainly brought a host of them. Right off the bat was Marina de Tavira’s nomination in Supporting Actress for ROMA. That let us know immediately that Alfonso Cuarón’s deeply personal film was going to have a very good morning. Elsewhere in supporting, Timothée Chalamet (Beautiful Boy) became this year’s recipient of the SAG/BFCA/Golden Globe/BAFTA who is snubbed at the Oscars. He lost out to either Sam Elliott (A Star Is Born) or Sam Rockwell (Vice), depending on how you look at it.

Black Panther made history as the first comic book film nominated for Best Picture. The $700M blockbuster earned 7 nominations overall, all in the technical categories to go with that top-level nod.

Best Director, which found nominations for Alfonso Cuarón, Yorgos Lanthimos, Spike Lee, Adam McKay and Pawel Pawlikowski, is where the influx of new, international Academy members really struck (the directing branch saw more new international members than any other, by percentage) as it became only the second time ever that three non-US born directors (Cuarón, Lanthimos, Pawlikowski) were nominated since the beginning of the Best Picture expansion era and only the second time in Oscar history that two directors of foreign language films were nominated together. The last time was Lina Wertmuller and Ingmar Bergman in 1976.

Damien Chazelle’s First Man had a tough morning with just four nominations and missing out on two that most of us pundits felt it had on lock: Film Editing and Original Score. If Beale Street Could Talk only managed three nominations – Adapted Screenplay, Supporting Actress (Regina King) and Original Score – but is potentially the frontrunner in at least two of them, despite missing out on a Best Picture nomination.

Emily Blunt, who was double nominated at SAG (lead for Mary Poppins Returns, supporting for A Quiet Place) became double snubbed this morning.

In looking at who the Best Picture Oscar frontrunner is now…it’s still very open. Some of the top contenders are missing crucial nominations: Green Book is missing Director (but got Editing?); ROMA is missing Editing (but got Director); A Star Is Born is missing both – it’s done. Only three films have Director, Editing and a Screenplay nomination: BlacKkKlansman, The Favourite and Vice. Of those, only BlacKkKlansman has a SAG Cast nomination.

The 91st Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at the Dolby Theatre^® at Hollywood & Highland Center^®in Hollywood, and will be televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscars also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.
