Two more categories that received shortlist treatment yesterday, Makeup & Hairstyling and Visual Effects, saw some wild snubs and set us up for two interesting races.
In Makeup & Hairstyling, the garish face paint and wigs of The Favourite missed the cut but two other queen biopics made it in and will be forces to be reckoned with.
Even though Mary Queen of Scots isn’t making much of a dent in the top 8 categories (outside of that surprise SAG nom for Margot Robbie), the makeup branch of the Academy goes gaga for Queen Elizabeth so MQOS should find a spot, even in a final three.
The other ‘Queen’ biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, is already proving itself a major player within the industry with that SAG Cast nomination last week. I have it way down in 7th at the moment but it is a major spoiler here.
Here are my 2019 Oscar Predictions in Makeup & Hairstyling for December 18, 2018.
Green – moves up Red – moves down Blue – debut/re-entry
1. Black Panther (BFCA)
2. Vice (BFCA)
3. Mary Queen of Scots (BFCA)
4. Stan and Ollie
5. Suspiria (BFCA)
6. Border
7. Bohemian Rhapsody (BFCA)
With titles like Bumblebee and Annihilation not making the final 10 from the previous 20-film list (or Paddington 2!) we’re left with some major franchises and sequels for the most part.
I think I discounted Solo: A Star Wars Story too early because of its box office. That probably won’t matter for a nomination, the same as it won’t for Ready Player One or First Man.
Here are my 2019 Oscar Predictions in Visual Effects for December 18, 2019.
