After a whisper of a first season that was almost a cult status show back in 2016, the second season of the British comedy Fleabag became one of the most talked about, most buzzed about and then one of the most-nominated shows on television this year. Tonight, the show dominated the 35th Annual Television Critics Association Awards with three big wins, including Program of the Year, beating out HBO’s Chernobyl and Game of Thrones, FX’s Pose and Netflix’s Russian Doll and When They See Us.
The Amazon show won all three of its nominated categories, adding Outstanding Individual Achievement in Comedy and Outstanding Achievement in Comedy, both of which went to its star and creator, Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
In the comedy series category, Fleabag bested Barry, 2018 winner The Good Place, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Russian Doll, Schitt’s Creek and Veep, which also happen to be its exact competition at this year’s Emmy Awards, where the show has 11 nominations. For Individual Achievement, Waller-Bridge won over Pamela Adlon (Better Things), Bill Hader (Barry), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep), Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll) and Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek).
Elsewhere, Michelle Williams won for Individual Achievement in Drama for her stunning turn as Gwen Verdon in the FX limited series Fosse/Verdon and Better Call Saul surprised with a drama series win over The Good Fight, Homecoming, Killing Eve, Pose and Succession. Pose entered the night with the most nominations (four, tied with Russian Doll) but went home from the ball without a trophy. Repeat winners from last year were Queer Eye for Reality Programming and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver for Sketch/Variety Series.
The awards were handed out Saturday night at a non-televised ceremony hosted by Desus & Mero.
