2020 Emmy Nominations: ‘Watchmen’ leads history-making number of Black nominees
It’s been a roller coaster season for entertainment with the coronavirus pandemic upending film and television productions and it didn’t stop today as the nominations for the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards were announced, giving us some wild and bold choices, some shocking snubs and some very deserved inclusions.
The network nomination leaders were Netflix with 160 nods (up from 118 last year) and HBO, which picked up 107 (down from 137 last year, 32 of which were for Game of Thrones).
HBO’s Watchmen is the most-nominated show of the year with 26 nods, including limited series, lead actress for Regina King, three directing nominations and three men making the cut for supporting actor in a limited series: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Louis Gossett Jr. and Jovan Adepo.
Ozark and Succession have the most nominations for a drama series with 15. Each earned two directing nominations and in writing Ozark grabbed three spots. Succession nabbed three spots in supporting actor: Kieran Culkin, Nicholas Braun and Matthew Macfadyen. The Marvelous Mrs Maisel leads comedy with 20 while missing out completely in the writing category. Schitt’s Creek was next with 15 and is nominated for writing (x2), directing plus acting nominations in all four categories.
Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series makes Emmy history with five Black actors nominated: Mahershala Ali, Kenan Thompson, William Jackson Harper, Andre Braugher and Sterling K. Brown. Modern Family pulls off one final directing nomination for its finale.
Shocks and surprises came in big ways with Disney+’s The Mandalorian showing up in drama series among its 15 nominations, a first for a streamer in its inaugural year. Netflix’s Unorthodox shook up the race finding a place in the very slim set of five nominees for limited series and for its lead actress, Shira Haas. Zendaya (HBO’s Euphoria) was an audible gasp to anyone watching the nominations this morning. Her deserved mention for lead actress in a drama series was not heavily predicted as she beat out heavy hitters like Viola Davis and Elisabeth Moss, both previous winners. FX’s What We Do in the Shadows earned three writing nominations in the comedy category.
Saturday Night Live’ Leslie Jones was joined by Laverne Cox, Josh Gad and Tatiana Maslany to announce the nominations. Barring any change, The Emmy Awards will air September 20 on ABC.
