When all is said and done, how did we actually do? Every year brings its twists and turns with surprise nominations and shocking snubs but it’s quite another to be able to call them. We did some of the time – and each of us found ourselves as lone predictors in categories that paid off.
Here is the breakdown of all of the Drama, Comedy and Limited Series categories that Erik, Kevin and Amanda predicted, who did best in each section and who the big winner was overall.
DRAMA SERIES (8)
Better Call Saul (AMC) – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu) – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
The Crown (Netflix) – Erik, Kevin, Amanda

Stranger Things (Netflix) – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
Succession (HBO) – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
The Morning Show (Apple TV+) – Erik, Kevin
Pose (FX) – Erik, Kevin
Big Little Lies (HBO) – Amanda
Westworld (HBO) – Amanda
Missed: The Mandalorian (Disney+) and Killing Eve (AMC/BBC America)
We all got the top contenders Better Call Saul, The Handmaid’s Tale, The Crown, Ozark, Stranger Things and Succession but none of us saw The Mandalorian coming and we all blew it on Killing Eve remaining strong.
LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES (6)
Jason Bateman – Ozark – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
Sterling K. Brown – This Is Us – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
Brian Cox – Succession – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
Bob Odenkirk – Better Call Saul – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
Tobias Menzies – The Crown – Erik, Amanda
Billy Porter – Pose – Erik, Kevin
Jeremy Strong – Succession – Kevin, Amanda
Missed: Steve Carell – The Morning Show
We all got Jason Bateman, Sterling K. Brown and Brian Cox but Bob Odenkirk is something we didn’t see coming. Erik and Kevin got Billy Porter returning; Kevin and Amanda got Jeremy Strong. Steve Carell getting in seemed like an outside chance but clearly it was not.
LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES (6)
Jennifer Aniston – The Morning Show – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
Olivia Colman – The Crown – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
Viola Davis – How to Get Away with Murder – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
Laura Linney – Ozark – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
Elisabeth Moss – The Handmaid’s Tale – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
The biggest shocks came here. We all got Jennifer Aniston, Olivia Colman and Laura Linney but none of us saw the snubs for Viola Davis and Elisabeth Moss being in the mix. Erik and Kevin stuck with Jodie Comer but again, we all fell short on Killing Eve and Sandra Oh returning to the fray and freshman Zendaya breaking through.
SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES (8)
Jonathan Banks – Better Call Saul – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
Billy Crudup – The Morning Show – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
Kieran Culkin – Succession – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
David Harbour – Stranger Things – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
Tom Pelphrey – Ozark – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
Bradley Whitford – The Handmaid’s Tale – Erik, Kevin, Amanda

Matthew Macfadyen – Succession – Kevin, Amanda
Mandy Patinkin – Homeland – Erik, Kevin
Missed: Nicholas Braun – Succession, Mark Duplass – The Morning Show, Giancarlo Esposito – Better Call Saul, Jeffrey Wright – Westworld
We chuffed this one good, only getting half the eventual nominees. None of us got all three Succession guys making it in (none of us had Nicholas Braun) but we all had Kieran Culkin while Kevin and Amanda also had Matthew Macfadyen. We all got Billy Crudup and Bradley Whitford but no one saw the snubs for Jonathan Banks, David Harbour and Tom Pelphrey coming or the return of Jeffrey Wright and first timer Mark Duplass.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES (8)
Helena Bonham Carter – The Crown – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
Ann Dowd – The Handmaid’s Tale – Erik, Kevin, Amanda

Yvonne Strahovski – The Handmaid’s Tale – Kevin
Laura Dern – Big Little Lies – Amanda
Rhea Seehorn – Better Call Saul – Erik
Missed: Fiona Shaw – Killing Eve, Samira Wiley – The Handmaid’s Tale
We all got HBC, Julia Garner, Thandie Newton, Sarah Snook and Meryl Streep. We were all shocked by snubs of Ann Dowd and Janet McTeer and none of us picked the actual player from The Handmaid’s Tale getting in – Samira Wiley, as well as the return of Fiona Shaw. Amanda stuck with Laura Dern and it paid off.
GUEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES (6)
James Cromwell – Succession – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
Charles Dance – The Crown – Erik, Kevin, Amanda

Kudos to Kevin for his Martin Short prediction! Kudos to Erik for Jason Bateman. We all got James Cromwell, Ron Cephas Jones and Andrew Scott. The big shock was Giancarlo Esposito as part of the big sweep for The Mandalorian.

Cherry Jones – The Handmaid’s Tale – Kevin
Missed: Harriet Walter – Succession
We all got Alexis Bledel, Laverne Cox, Cherry Jones and Cicely Tyson. But we all flopped with our predictions for The Crown and The Handmaid’s Tale here, both of which underperformed in the acting categories. We all collectively missed Harriet Walter.
DIRECTING FOR A DRAMA SERIES (8)
The Crown – “Aberfan” (Benjamin Caron) – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
Better Call Saul – “Bagman” (Vince Gilligan) – Erik
The Handmaid’s Tale – “Mayday” (Mike Barker) – Amanda
Ozark – “Su Casa Es Mi Casa” (Ben Semanoff) – Amanda
Succession – “Hunting” (Andrij Parekh) – Kevin
Missed: The Crown – “Cri de Coeur;” The Morning Show – “The Interview”
Amanda called the double Ozark noms while Kevin called the two for Succession. Kevin and Erik both correctly picked Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland’s sole nomination) and while we all picked one episode for The Crown, we didn’t see the second one coming. No one got The Morning Show (we all picked The Handmaid’s Tale). We all thought Stranger Things was going to be stronger but it wasn’t. Erik put too much into Jason Bateman’s directing win last year into him getting in for The Outsider this year.
WRITING FOR A DRAMA SERIES (7)
The Crown – “Aberfan” (Peter Morgan) – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
The Handmaid’s Tale – “Mayday” (Bruce Miller) – Erik, Kevin, Amanda
Stranger Things – “Chapter Eight: The Battle of Starcourt” (The Duffer Brothers) – Kevin
Missed: Ozark – “Boss Fight”
Three nominations for Ozark? Amanda fared best with two. Kevin and I just had one. Kevin and Erik got one of Better Call Saul’s noms, Amanda got the other. We all got the single submissions of The Crown and Succession but failed on The Handmaid’s Tale missing out here.

Insecure (HBO) – Erik, Kevin
The Kominsky Method (Netflix) – Amanda
Missed: What We Do in the Shadows (FX)
We all put too much faith in first season of The Great and the last season of Silicon Valley. Amanda correctly picked The Kominsky Method while Erik and Kevin accurately chose Insecure. None of us saw the vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows coming into the light.

Missed: Andre Braugher – Brooklyn Nine-Nine, William Jackson Harper – The Good Place
Looking at how disparate our predictions were here we knew it was going to tough to nail down and it was. We all went 4/8 as a group with Erik and Kevin getting Mahersala Ali and Kevin getting Kenan Thompson. None of us called the return of Andre Braugher or William Jackson Harper and we all overestimated Nicholas Hoult.

The flop return of Curb Your Enthusiasm stopped Jon Hamm here. Erik and Amanda got Brad Pitt, Kevin got Fred Willard, we all got Eddie Murphy and Luke Kirby. We were all blindsided by Adam Driver (and chose John Mulaney instead) and Dev Patel.

Angela Bassett – A Black Lady Sketch Show – Erik

Missed: Bette Midler – The Politician, Maya Rudolph – Saturday Night Live
Wassup double nominee Maya Rudolph. We all had her for The Good Place but none of us were risky enough to also have her for SNL. We got the wrong actress for The Politician but we all got Sykes and Waller-Bridge but only Erik called Angela Bassett.

Missed: What We Do in the Shadows – “Collaboration,” “Ghosts,” “On the Run”
Should have seen the Mrs. Maisel snub coming but we didn’t. Certainly not in favor of THREE episodes of What We Do in the Shadows. A total blindside there. We all got The Good Place and one Schitt’s Creek (Amanda got both SC). Erik and Amanda got The Great.

The Watchmen cup runneth over but not for Tim Blake Nelson as Jovan Adepo took his heavily predicted spot. Same goes for Joe Mantello, who lost out to co-star Dylan McDermott. We all missed Tituss Burgess, too.

Rose Byrne – Mrs. America – Kevin
Allison Janney – Bad Education – Amanda
Patti LuPone – Hollywood – Erik
Missed: Holland Taylor – Hollywood, Tracey Ullman – Mrs. America
This was always going to be tough, figuring out which Mrs. America actresses would make the cut and although we were all correct on Uzo Aduba and Margo Martindale, we put all of our chips in for Emmy magnet Sarah Paulson when it was Tracey Ullman that would prevail. Speaking of Paulson, her partner Holland Taylor makes it in over her co-star Patti LuPone.

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013.
He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
