2020 Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG): ‘Parasite’ makes history as first non-English language film to win top prize

The South Korean film Parasite made history tonight as the first film ever to win the Screen Actors Guild top prize, Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture. Earlier in the evening, the introduction of the film by actors Kang Ho Song, Sun Kyun Lee and So Dam Park received the biggest audience standing ovation of the night, a moment that proved to be the bellwether of what was to come.

Five-time nominee Joaquin Phoenix won his first SAG award as Actor in a Leading Role for Joker. Phoenix used his speech to highlight his peers in his category. “We’d always lose to this one kid!” ‘It’s Leonardo,’ casting directors would say. Renée Zellweger (Judy) won her 4th SAG award and became only the second actress to win a two lead awards from the Screen Actors Guild for motion pictures (after Frances McDormand) and ties Daniel Day-Lewis for the most individual wins (3).

Laura Dern knocked down another win on her way to her first Oscar, as Female Actor in a Supporting Role for Marriage Story, getting the opportunity to thank and celebrate in front of and with her father Bruce Dern, a nominee as part of the cast of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) won Actor in a Supporting Role and took the time to laud his fellow actors as well as rib his director Quentin Tarantino’s foot fetish saying, “Quentin has separated more women from their shoes than the TSA.” It is his second win from nine nominations.

Tony Shalhoub (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) won his 4th SAG award as Male Actor in a Comedy Series. Phoebe Waller-Bridge continued her reign after Emmy and Golden Globe wins as Actress in a Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for Fleabag‘s second season. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won its second ensemble prize in a row, upsetting Fleabag and Schitt’s Creek. Despite being the Emmy champion, Peter Dinklage won his first SAG award for Game of Thrones after six nominations. The Crown won its first Ensemble award for its third season. Jennifer Aniston won her 2nd SAG award of 11 nominations, this time in Female Actor in a Drama Series for The Morning Show. She took time to shout of co-star Reese Witherspoon (“It’s been 20 years but we got here!”) and Adam Sandler on his role in Uncut Gems (“Adam Sandler, your performance is magic!”).

Michelle Williams completed her awards run, winning Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for Fosse/Verdon, winning the SAG tonight after the Emmy and Golden Globe. Her counterpart Sam Rockwell won Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series, the third SAG win of his career, upsetting Emmy winner Jharrel Jerome (When They See Us).

Game of Thrones‘ Gwendoline Christie introduced a clip segment for heroes, invoking Black Panther, Wonder Woman and climate change activist Greta Thunberg in her opening. The clips began with traditional superheroes only to turn into a range of performances on and off screen that embodied the idea of a hero from Zach Gottsagen of The Peanut Butter Falcon to Jamie Leigh Curtis of Halloween.

Robert De Niro, who received a nomination this year as a member of the cast of The Irishman, is the 2020 recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award and be presented by Screen Actors Guild winner Leonardo DiCaprio. In his intro, DiCaprio recalled his early moviegoing days and interest by recalling his own father’s advice, “If you want to understand what great acting is, watch that man on screen.” De Niro wasted no time advocating for politicians that support immigration, diversity, reproductive rights and more: “There’s right and there’s wrong and there’s abuse of power. I have a right to use my voice.”

As was spearheaded by the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards, the SAG Awards provided a plant-based, eco-friendly meal created by renowned chef Wolfgang Puck consisting of a romano bean salad with arugula, niçoise olives, shaved baby peppers and sweet onion vinaigrette, a paella rice salad with squash, Tuscan kale and piquillo peppers, charred harissa-glazed baby carrots, little gem lettuce, pita, sumac and lavash.

The SAG Awards has been the recipient of the Environmental Media Association (EMA) Green Seal for 11 years running in addition to having been awarded the EMA Gold Seal and the Green Production honor. The SAG Awards has also partnered for multiple years with non-profit environmental organizations such as American Forests. For the 25th Anniversary of the SAG Awards, American Forests planted 25,000 trees across the U.S. in a collaborative effort to improve the quality of air, water and wildlife habitat.
