Taika Waititi and Bong Joon Ho with their Writers Guild of America “baby humpback whale tails,” as Waititi said on Twitter

The 73rd Writers Guild of America awards have anointed Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit and Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite as the best Adapted and Original Screenplays of 2019.

The party started right from the top as the two first awards announced were those two ‘big’ film awards: Adapted and Original Screenplay, which went to Taika Waititi for Jojo Rabbit and Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Wan for Parasite, respectively. The pair (along with a few other nominees) needed to jump on a plane to London for tomorrow’s BAFTAs.

Neither of last year’s WGA winners (Can You Ever Forgive Me? and Eighth Grade) went on to turn their WGA success into Oscar gold. Eighth Grade wasn’t nominated and the Oscar winners ended up being BlacKkKlansman and Green Book.

Actress-comedian-singer Ana Gasteyer (Saturday Night Live) is set to host 2020 Writers Guild Awards L.A. show on Saturday, February 1, at The Beverly Hilton beginning at 5pm PST, with a companion New York ceremony happening simultaneously.

Barry won Comedy Series for the second year in a row, Watchmen won New Series and Succession scooped both of its categories: Drama Series and Episodic Drama for the episode “Tern Haven.” The pilot of Dead to Me beat out The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for Episodic Comedy but the biggest surprise may have been I Think You Should Leave with Tim Morrison besting Saturday Night Live for Sketch Comedy Series.

Charles Randolph will receive the 2020 Paul Selvin Award in recognition of his script for Bombshell.

Brad Falchuk (American Horror Story, American Crime Story, Glee) will receive 2020 Valentine Davies Award in recognition of his positive impact on young writers.

Trailblazing screenwriter-director-producer Nancy Meyers (the Oscar-nominated Private Benjamin, It’s Complicated) will be the recipient of the 2020 Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement.

TV comedy writer Merrill Markoe (Late Night with David Letterman) will receive the 2020 Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement.

Erik Anderson

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
