After facing off at the BAFTA TV craft awards two weeks ago, Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You and Steve McQueen’s Small Axe went head to head again at the second part of the 2021 British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ (BAFTA) TV Awards where Coel’s HBO series topped once again, grabbing a total of five of its eight nominations, four for Coel alone. I May Destroy You won Miniseries and Leading Actress for Coel tonight, while Small Axe won Supporting Actor for Malachi Kirby for the Mangrove section of the Amazon anthology, taking six of its 15 nominations.
In her speeches for Miniseries and Leading Actress, Coel took time to thank the show’s intimacy director, Ita O’Brien. “I want to dedicate this award to the director of intimacy Ita O’Brien. Thank you for your existence in our industry, for making the space safe for creating physical, emotional, and professional boundaries so that we can make work about exploitation, loss of respect, about abuse of power, without being exploited or abused in the process,” Coel said.
“I know what it’s like to shoot without an intimacy director — the messy, embarrassing feeling for the crew, the internal devastation for the actor. Your direction was essential to my show, and I believe essential for every production company that wants to make work exploring themes of consent,” she added.
In the first awards two week ago that centered on crafts, Small Axe took home five trophies, including JoJo Williams for Make Up & Hair Design, Jacqueline Durran for Costume Design, Helen Scott for Production Design, Shabier Kirchner for Photography & Lighting for Fiction and Gary Davy for Scripted Casting. The series led the overall nominations with 15. I May Destroy You won three there including two for Coel for Director for Fiction (with Sam Miller, where she bested McQueen) and Writer for Drama. The limited series also won Editing for Fiction.
Small Axe led the overall nominations with 15, followed by The Crown with 10. The royal drama lost all 10 bids. BBC and Hulu’s Normal People had seven nominations (they went 0/4 two weeks ago) and won Leading Actor for Paul Mescal in a bit of a surprise. The Irish actor bested John Boyega and Shaun Parkes for Small Axe and Josh O’Connor for The Crown. Netflix’s Sex Education earned six nominations and won Female Performance in a Comedy Program for Aimee Lou Wood.
Casualty beat out Coronation Street, Eastenders and Hollyoaks for Soap & Continuing Drama Series and Save Me Too won Drama Series, besting The Crown, Gangs of London and I Hate Suzie.
Tonight’s BAFTA TV Awards were hosted by Richard Ayoade and and began with Channel 4’s It’s a Sin star Olly Alexander (Years and Years) opening the ceremony with his new song, “Starstruck.”

This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013.
He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
