2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards – Night Two, Show One: Condragulations, ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ is the winner of this challenge

The second Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony was held Sunday afternoon and RuPaul’s Drag Race was the big winner of the day with four wins for the main show and a first win for its aftershow, Untucked, its first win in five nominations. RuPaul won his sixth Emmy in a row for Outstanding Host of a Reality or Competition Program, extending his record set last year. RuPaul has also tied the record for the most Emmy wins by a person of color (with cinematographer Donald A. Morgan) and if the series wins outstanding competition program again next week, he will break that record.

The first of three Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies saw Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit dominate, winning seven of its eight categories, clearing the way for a likely sweep at the Primetime Emmys next weekend.

After years of overlap between the Oscars and the Emmys in documentary categories, this is the last year where a film in Oscar contention can also be in the running for an Emmy. In previous years, several documentary feature Oscar winners, like Free Solo and O.J.: Made in America, have double dipped and picked up several Emmy wins after their Oscar success. A statement by the Television Academy said last winter: “To clarify the distinction between theatrical motion pictures and television movies during the ongoing pandemic, any non-documentary film placed on the AMPAS viewing platform for Oscar consideration will be deemed a theatrical motion picture and thus ineligible for the Emmy competition.”

In the Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking category, the Oscar-shortlisted COVID-19 film 76 Days triumphed while Oscar hopefuls Boys State and Dick Johnson is Dead also found themselves winners in Emmy categories.

David Attenborough’s Life on This Planet won three awards, although Attenborough himself was upset in the narrator category by Sterling K. Brown for Lincoln: Divided We Stand. Attenborough had won the category for the last two years.

More upsets came in animated program where Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal won over the likes of Big Mouth and The Simpsons and multiple wins came in the form of The Social Dilemma, Life Before Zero and Love, Death + Robots, which ends its Emmy run today with six awards – two competitive and four juried. Queer Eye won the structured reality program Emmy, its fourth in a row.

Later tonight will be the final night of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which will give us winners in the guest acting categories, casting for narrative programming and several variety categories.

Here is the complete list of winners from ceremony #2 of the 2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
