2021 Creative Arts Emmy Awards – Night Two, Show Two: ‘The Mandalorian,’ ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ surge going into the Primetime Emmys

Published by
Share

Tonight was the last of three Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies, where The Mandalorian and The Queen’s Gambit continued their domination going into the Primetime Emmy Awards next weekend.

The Mandalorian picked up four more wins tonight, for visual effects, music composition and stunts while The Queen’s Gambit picked up two more wins here (casting, music), pushing its total to nine. It needs four more wins to tie John Adams for the most wins for a mini/limited series and five to break the record.

In the guest acting categories, the winners were Claire Foy (The Crown), J.B. Smoove (Mapleworth Murders), Keke Palmer (Keke Palmer’s Turnt Up With The Taylors) and Courtney B. Vance (Lovecraft Country). Traditionally, those winners will present at the Primetime Emmys next week but chances are Foy, in an unexpected win, isn’t likely to fly out for a 2-minute presenting stint.

The casting awards, sometimes very good bellwethers for series wins, went to Ted Lasso, The Crown and The Queen’s Gambit.

Bo Burnham also made a play, winning three individual awards tonight for his special Inside, in writing, directing and music direction. He lost his music & lyrics bid, however, to “Agatha All Along” from WandaVision.

Earlier today, the second ceremony awarded Emmys in reality and documentary programming where RuPaul’s Drag Race (and its after show Untucked) dominated. RuPaul’s Drag Race took home four wins for the main show and a first win for its after show, Untucked, its first win in five nominations. RuPaul won his sixth Emmy in a row for Outstanding Host of a Reality or Competition Program, extending his record set last year. RuPaul has also tied the record for the most Emmy wins by a person of color (10, with cinematographer Donald A. Morgan) and if Drag Race wins outstanding competition program again next week, he will break that record.

The first of three Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremonies saw Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit dominate, winning seven of its eight categories, clearing the way for a likely sweep at the Primetime Emmys next weekend and mirroring its guild wins from earlier this year, besting its new competition like Mare of Easttown and WandaVision. The Netflix chess drama took home wins in cinematography, costumes, picture editing, makeup, production design, sound editing, and sound mixing. Speaking of WandaVision, the Disney+ show entered the Emmys with the most nominations with 24, but only managed to nab two prizes.

This year’s Creative Arts ceremonies, were held in a tent on the L.A. Live events deck in downtown Los Angeles, and were split into three events over two days, on September 11 and September 12. A two-hour, edited version of the three Creative Arts ceremonies will air on FXXX September 18.

The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast on Sunday, September 19, (8:00-11:00 PM, live EDT/5:00-8:00 PM, live PDT) on the CBS Television Network and will be available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+.

Erik Anderson

Erik Anderson is the founder/owner and Editor-in-Chief of AwardsWatch and has always loved all things Oscar, having watched the Academy Awards since he was in single digits; making lists, rankings and predictions throughout the show. This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
