The 2022 Australian Academy Cinema Television Arts (AACTA) nominations for Australian-based productions have been announced and Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis leads the way with a whopping 15 nods, earning a spot in every category except Best Actress.

The flashy Elvis Presley biopic earned nominations for Best Film, director, lead actor (Austin Butler), supporting actor (Tom Hanks), supporting actress (Olivia DeJonge) and every craft and technical category the AACTA offers.

The AACTA Awards (formerly the AFI Awards) have awarded screen excellence in Australia since the first (then) AFI Awards were held in 1958. Held annually in Sydney in recognition and celebration of Australia’s highest achievements in film and television, the AACTA Awards present over 55 awards across two major ceremonies. The peer-assessed AACTA Awards are the only Australian industry body to award practitioners across all crafts and industry sectors, including feature film, documentary, short film, television, online, visual effects and animation.

Just behind the nomination totals were Leah Purcell’s The Drover’s Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson and George Millers’s Three Thousand Years of Longing with 13 apiece and Thomas M. Wright’s The Stranger with 11. The AACTA International Awards nominations will be announced in November.

The 2022 AACTA Industry Awards will be held on Monday, December 5 and the 2022 AACTA Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, December 7. Both ceremonies will be presented by Foxtel Group and will be held at The Hordern, in Sydney’s iconic Entertainment Quarter.

This led him down the path to obsessing about awards. Much later, he found himself in film school and the film forums of GoldDerby, and then migrated over to the former Oscarwatch (now AwardsDaily), before breaking off to create AwardsWatch in 2013. He is a Rotten Tomatoes-approved critic, accredited by the Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and more, is a member of the International Cinephile Society (ICS), The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA), Hollywood Critics Association (HCA) and the International Press Academy. Among his many achieved goals with AwardsWatch, he has given a platform to underrepresented writers and critics and supplied them with access to film festivals and the industry and calls the Bay Area his home where he lives with his husband and son.
