2023 Emmy Nominations: ‘Succession,’ ‘The Last of Us,’ ‘The White Lotus’ and ‘Ted Lasso’ Lead All Shows
The 2023 Emmy nominations were announced this morning by Emmy-nominated actress Yvette Nicole Brown and Television Academy chairman and CEO Frank Scherma where Succession (27), The Last of Us (24), The White Lotus (24) and Ted Lasso (21) earned the most mentions.
At the top of the announcement, Scherma made a very brief mention of the ongoing WGA strike (now its 70th+ day) and the impending SAG-AFTRA strike set to be announced today, hoping for an “equitable and swift resolution.”
Succession made Emmy history becoming the first drama or comedy series to earn three lead actor nominations as Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong all made the cut. Strong is a previous winner here for Succession and Culkin graduates from supporting to lead.
Supporting Actor in a Drama Series is entirely made of Succession and The White Lotus actors: F. Murray Abraham (The White Lotus), Nicholas Braun (Succession), Michael Imperioli (The White Lotus), Theo James (The White Lotus), Matthew Macfadyen, Alan Ruck (Succession), Will Sharpe (The White Lotus), and Alexander Skarsgård (Succession). Matthew Macfadyen won last year.
Just as they did last year in Limited Series, The White Lotus also dominated the Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category with 5 spots: Jennifer Coolidge, Meghann Fahey, Sabrina Impacciatore, Aubrey Plaza, and Simona Tabasco. Jennifer Coolidge won last year.
The Last of Us, The White Lotus and Ted Lasso all chalked up nine acting nominations while Succession tied its Emmy record-setting number of 14 from last year to this year.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel became the most-nominated streaming comedy ever at the Emmys with 80, adding 14 nominations to its 66-nomination tally in its fifth and final season. Additionally, Freevee’s James Marsden-led comedy series Jury Duty, which earned four nominations overall, became the first AVOD series ever nominated in a major category.
There were 38 first-time performer nominees across all performer categories this season including Jessica Chastain (George & Tammy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown), Taron Egerton (Black Bird), Riley Keough (Daisy Jones & The Six), James Marsden (Jury Duty), Jenna Ortega (Wednesday), Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, Saturday Night Live, and Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World), Aubrey Plaza (The White Lotus), Daniel Radcliffe (Weird: The Al Yankovic Story), Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us), Alan Ruck (Succession), Jason Segel (Shrinking), Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) and Steven Yeun (BEEF).
Triple nominations were in order for Pedro Pascal, Quinta Brunson and Mike White today. Pascal earned nominations for Lead Actor in a Drama Series for The Last of Us, Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for Saturday Night Live, and Narrator for Patagonia: Life On The Edge Of The World. Brunson earned nominations for Comedy Series for Abbott Elementary, Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Abbott Elementary, and Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for Saturday Night Live. White earned nominations for Drama Series, Directing for a Drama Series and Writing for a Drama Series, all for The White Lotus. He won all of these categories last year when the show competed in the Limited Series section.
Performers with multiple nominations this year also include Murray Bartlett (The Last Of Us and Welcome To Chippendales), Alex Borstein (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Family Guy), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary and Saturday Night Live), Bill Hader (performance, directing and writing for Barry), Sharon Horgan (performance and writing for Bad Sisters), Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets and The Last of Us), Jason Sudeikis (performance and writing for Ted Lasso), and Ali Wong (BEEF and Tuca & Bertie).
Until otherwise noted, the Creative Arts Emmy Awards will once again be presented over two consecutive nights – Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10 – with an edited presentation of the ceremonies to be broadcast on FXX the following weekend. Final-round online voting begins August 17, 2023.
Talks between FOX and the Television Academy are underway in the face of a SAG-AFTRA strike postponing the show to possibly November or January but as of today the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards are currently set to take place on Monday, September 18, and air live on FOX at 8:00pm ET/ 5:00pm PT.
