2023 Oscar Nominations: ‘Everything Everywhere,’ ‘Banshees,’ ‘All Quiet’ lead; Best Actor breaks with 88 years of history

This morning, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, with special hosts Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams, announced nominations for the 95th Oscars where Everything Everywhere All at Once was the year’s most-nominated film, with 11 total nominations, including Best Picture, Best Directing, and four acting nominations.

All Quiet on the Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin follow with nine nominations apiece, followed closely by Elvis with 7 and TÁR and Top Gun: Maverick with 6. All are nominated in Best Picture along with Avatar: The Way of Water (4), Triangle of Sadness (3) and Women Talking (2).

It was a big year for firsts, with 16/20 acting nominees earning their first-ever nods. Only Cate Blanchett, Michelle Williams, Judd Hirsch and Angela Bassett had been previously nominated. In an even bigger first, the Best Actor race is comprised entirely of first-time nominees for the first time in 88 years. Austin Butler (Elvis), Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin), Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Paul Mescal (Aftersun) and Bill Nighy (Living) make up this year’s nominees. Not since 1934 has this category been comprised entirely of newcomers.

Another acting surprise was Andrea Riseborough in Best Actress for To Leslie. Of course, if you had been following the Herculean social media effort to get her nominated by some of the biggest stars and actors on the planet, it might not be that much of a surprise. Riseborough’s film, which came out in October and made just over $27K, found champions in the form of Gwyneth Paltrow, Edward Norton, Kate Winslet, and dozens more, who took to Twitter and Instagram with cut and paste posts proclaiming her performance to be among the best of all time and not to be ignored. The highly calculated and coordinated effort happened right as the short nomination voting had opened and it paid off. The Best Actress lineup, which also includes Blanchett (TÁR), Williams (The Fabelmans), Ana de Armas (Blonde) and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once), did not find room for Viola Davis (The Woman King) and Danielle Deadwyler (Till), shutting out Black women from the category.

The 95th Oscars will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel on Sunday, March 12, 2023, live from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. The ceremony will be televised live on ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide.

Here is the complete list of nominations. Analysis and more to come.
