Here are the shortlists that will be eligible for Oscar nominations that will be announced on January 24, 2023.

All Quiet on the Western Front and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever led the Oscar shortlists announced today, with five mentions each and five chances to turn those into Oscar nominations. All Quiet, Germany’s entry for International Feature Film, earned a spot in that category as well as Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Sound and Visual Effects. Black Panther‘s five came from Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Original Song (Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up”), Sound and Visual Effects. The first film earned Oscar nominations for Score (where it won) and Sound (both sound categories before they merged) but missed a Visual Effects nod.

Avatar: The Way of Water showed up in four categories today; original score, song, sound and also grabbed visual effects. Babylon, The Batman, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and Top Gun: Maverick landed in three categories each. Two curious misses for EEAAO with Makeup and Hairstyling and Visual Effects.

No Sound nomination for The Fabelmans, despite a team led by multi-Oscar winner Gary Rydstrom. Taylor Swift has one chance at an Oscar nomination instead of two; she makes the cut for her original song “Carolina” from Where the Crawdads Sing but her shot at a Live Action Short nomination for her 10-minute music video for “All Too Well” didn’t despite a hard fought campaign for it that started back at TIFF and went all the way through landing a spot on Variety’s director to director conversation.

The Critics’ Choice curse returned this year as CCA winner Good Night Oppy was snubbed for Documentary Feature but it also missed the Visual Effects cut. Michael Giacchino’s score for The Batman also missed the score shortlist and recent critics’ favorite RRR only landed one shortlist mention, original song for “Naatu Naatu,” but no score, sound or visual effect spots, showing that maybe support for the film within the Academy isn’t as strong as those outside of it (want to) think it is. Speaking of scores, teo-time winners Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor’s missed out on both of their 2022 scores this year, Bones and All and Empire of Light. Last year’s Original Song Oscar winner, Billie Eilish and Finneas, got left out this year for the song from Turning Red.

15 films will advance in the Documentary Feature Film category for the 95th Academy Awards. 144 films were eligible in the category. Members of the Documentary Branch vote to determine the shortlist and the nominees.

International Feature Film

15 films will advance to the next round of voting in the International Feature Film category for the 95th Academy Awards. Films from 92 countries and regions were eligible in the category. Academy members from all branches were invited to participate in the preliminary round of voting and must have met a minimum viewing requirement to be eligible to vote in the category.

In the nominations round, Academy members from all branches are invited to opt in to participate and must view all 15 shortlisted films to vote.

Branch members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar® consideration.

Branch members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.
