2024 AFI Awards: ‘Emilia Pérez,’ Nickel Boys,’ ‘Wicked’ Among Best Films; ‘Hacks,’ ‘The Penguin’ are Tops in TV

The American Film Institute (AFI) has revealed its top 10 films and television shows of 2024 with Anora, Conclave, Emilia Pérez and Nickel Boys among the top films and Hacks, A Man on the Inside, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and The Penguin leading up TV honors.

In previous years, international films have failed to meet eligibility requirements for the American-centric body with last year’s Oscar winners Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest not making the cut but this year France’s Academy Awards submission Emilia Pérez did, with the org noting “significant creative and/or production elements” rooted in the United States. Rounding out the AFI top 10 for film were The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, A Real Pain, Sing Sing and Wicked.

“AFI AWARDS is never about competition, but community,” said Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO. “We look forward to bringing these artists together as one and celebrating their collective power to drive culture forward.”

In television, the Emmy-winning Baby Reindeer was given the AFI Special Award, designated for works of excellence that fall outside of AFI Awards’ eligibility criteria. Other top TV shows included The Bear, Nobody Wants This and Shrinking. With Hacks, The Penguin and True Detective: Night Country, this is the 5th year HBO had the most or tied for the most of the 10 Television Programs of the Year.

Honorees will gather on Friday, January 10, 2025, for recognition at the annual AFI Awards private luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills.
