2024 BAFTA TV Awards Winners: ‘The Sixth Commandment,’ ‘Top Boy,’ ‘Happy Valley’
The main show of the 2024 BAFTA TV Awards were held tonight live from London’s Royal Festival Hall and hosted by Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan, who won this year’s award for Comedy Entertainment for their show Rob & Romesh Vs.
The French program Class Act beat out The Bear, Beef, The Last of Us, Love & Death and Succession for International Series. The series, about a relentlessly ambitious working-class man who becomes one of France’s most controversial public figures, is a fictionalized biopic about Bernard Tapie.
The six-time nominated The Sixth Commandment became a two-time winner, earning top awards for Limited Drama and Leading Actor for star Timothy Spall. Also with six nominations, the venerable Happy Valley won two awards: Best Leading Actress for Sarah Lancashire and the P&O Cruises Memorable Moment Award, which is voted on by the public.
Top Boy was a big winner with a Drama Series win, beating out the likes of Happy Valley and Slow Horses and Jasmine Jobson taking Supporting Actress, besting Elizabeth Debicki and Lesley Manville in The Crown, Harriet Walter in Succession, Nico Parker in The Last of Us and Siobhan Finneran in Happy Valley. Emmy Award winner Matthew Macfadyen was able to triumph in the Supporting Actor category for Succession. It is the second time he has won for this role, having won the BAFTA for Supporting Actor in 2022.
Gbemisola Ikumelo won Female Performance in a Comedy for Black Ops, which she also co-created. This is her first performance BAFTA. Mawaan Rizwan, the writer, comedian and creator of Juice won his first BAFTA for Male Performance in a Comedy.
Netflix’s The Crown, which chronicled the rises and falls of the British monarchy which began with the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, had earned the most BAFTA nominations with eight, it didn’t win a single prize for its sixth and final season.
The series earned acting nods for including for Dominic West, Elizabeth Debicki, Lesley Manville and Salim Daw, yet also missed out on a lead performance nomination for Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth, and for series, where it had earned three previous nominations.
AppleTV+’s Slow Horses was a double winner, for editing and sound.
Eurovision Song Contest, which just aired its 2024 edition yesterday, won two BAFTA TV Awards for its 2023 presentation, for multi-camera direction and live event coverage.
In a ceremony held two weeks ago, Demon 79, The Last of Us, Silo and The Witcher were among the craft category winners.
