2024 Black Reel Awards Nominations: ‘Nickel Boys,’ ‘The Piano Lesson’ Lead

RaMell Ross’ Nickel Boys and Malcolm Washington’s The Piano Lesson lead the 2024 Black Reel Awards (BRA) nominations with 13 and 12 apiece, respectively. Both are the first feature films for each director.

Both films earned nominations for Outstanding Film alongside Challengers, Exhibiting Forgiveness and Sing Sing. Joining Ross and Washington on the director list were Titus Kaphar for Exhibiting Forgiveness, Zoë Kravitz for Blink Twice and Steve McQueen for Blitz.

In the gender-neutral acting categories the lead performance nominees included Naomi Ackie for Blink Twice, Colman Domingo for Sing Sing, Cynthia Erivo for Wicked, Marianne Jean-Baptiste for Hard Truths and Zendaya for Challengers. In supporting, nominees included Danielle Deadwyler for The Piano Lesson, Brian Tyree Henry for The Fire Inside, Lashana Lynch for Bob Marley: One Love, Jurnee Smollett for We Grown Now and Brandon Wilson for Nickel Boys.

The Black Reel Awards are presented by the Foundation for the Augmentation of African-Americans in Film (FAAAF) and honor artists across 22 categories, as determined by the group’s voting membership. The ceremony will stream live on Feb. 10 on BlackReelAwards.com.

“As we commemorate 25 years, we are proud to highlight the transformative power of Black cinema,” stated Black Reel Awards founder Tim Gordon. “This year’s nominees represent not only excellence in storytelling but also groundbreaking achievements that push boundaries and elevate our culture.”
