2024 Emmy Predictions in Drama, Comedy, Limited Series including Writing, Directing, Guest Acting
With voting for the 2024 Emmy nominations officially closed, it’s time to look at the categories to see which shows could make the biggest impact when the nominations are revealed next month.
Shōgun will surely see a huge number of nominations for its first season, especially now that it has moved into drama and will likely provide audiences with more seasons. It’s difficult to say the exact number, but expect FX’s newest drama to make a big splash in the performance categories as well as the writing and directing categories, where it could see at least two nominations in each. The show has gained momentum quickly over the past couple months, so it stands a huge shot at winning Drama Series later this year at the ceremony (if the series can manage the nomination, of course). Other series entering the mix like Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Fallout (both from Prime Video) will be tough contenders to go up against, as the past few months of television has given audiences so many good narratives it might be difficult for voters to decide where their loyalties lie.
The Bear and Hacks will be gunning for the most nominations in the comedy categories, both in their third seasons with previous Emmy wins under their belts. It will be more telling how the actual ceremony will go once the nominations are out, but it will be fun to see how many each show can grab. The Bear will surely take home a hefty handful from the guest categories alone, as its second season rolled out a red carpet almost every episode to the best guest stars of last year. Other series like Only Murders in the Building will make lovely alternates in the background battle happening behind these two juggernauts. A series to watch out for is I’m a Virgo, which has opted to go into comedy as opposed to the limited series categories, a choice that could pay off in the end.
Reality competition will heat up this year as The Traitors is likely to join the pool of nominees after its sophomore season had the attention of the entire season. The season announced its third season cast just a few weeks ago which will keep the name of the show on everyone’s lips heading into the next few months.
Based on the total number of submissions, here’s what to expect in each category:
- Drama lead actor and actress will both have 6 nominees (81 and 67 submissions, respectively)
- Drama supporting actor and actress will both have 7 nominees (217 and 194 submissions, respectively)
- Comedy lead actor and actress will both have 5 nominees (55 and 58 submissions, respectively)
- Comedy supporting actor and actress will both have 6 nominees (147 and 132 submissions, respectively)
- Limited series lead actor and actress will both have 5 nominees (70 and 62 nominees, respectively)
- Limited series supporting actor and actress will both have 7 nominees (171 and 137 submissions, respectively)
- For the writing categories, there will be 6 slots for drama, comedy, and limited series
- For the directing categories, there will be 6 slots for drama, comedy, and limited series
