2024 Emmy Predictions: ‘Shōgun’ Makes it Official with Two More Seasons Set at FX, Pushing it into Drama

FX confirmed yesterday that it has plans on moving forward with Shōgun as a drama series and hopes for two more seasons, definitively renewing the series and pushing the show into the drama categories. This will bring new competitors into the mix with series like Fallout and The Gilded Age, as it should be expected that Shōgun will still do well regardless of what categories it is competing in. Ripley might see a bit more love from the Television Academy with a series like Shōgun out of the limited series categories, opening up room for such a series as the Netflix slow burn. Prime Video has renewed Mr. and Mrs. Smith for another season that will not see leads Maya Erskine and Donald Glover returning to the spy drama. The series will compete in the drama categories this year.

Even though the eligibility deadline is approaching (May 31st), HBO made a last-minute announcement of a television movie that will join the fray. The Great Lillian Hall, starring Jessica Lange as the titular character, will premiere on May 31st as HBO’s final entry into the Limited Series or TV Movie categories for this year. Boasting an all star cast including the aforementioned Lange, the film also stars Kathy Bates, Lily Rabe, and Pierce Brosnan. Even with little knowledge of what to expect from the movie, it can be predicted that Lange could easily be taking someone’s spot in the Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category.

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards will honor the best in American prime time television programming from June 1, 2023, until May 31, 2024, as chosen by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The entry deadline for all materials is May 9 and the full season submission deadline is May 31.

First round voting for the nomination stage begins June 13 and goes through June 24 at 10pm PT. Nominations are announced July 17 and the winner round of voting lasts from August 15 to 26 at 10pm PT. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards and Governors Gala will be held on September 7 and 8. The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards will be held at the Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, California on September 15.
