2024 European Film Awards: Emilia Pérez Sweeps; Karla Sofía Gascón Makes History

The 37th European Film Awards were held tonight in Lucerne, where Jacques Audiard’s crime-thriller musical Emilia Pérez took home awards in four categories: European Film, European Director, European Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, and European Screenwriter. Interestingly, Emilia Pérez won the same awards as a formidable Oscar contender last year, Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or-winning courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall.

Gascón also makes history as the first trans actress to win the Best Actress prize. While this category doesn’t always align with the Academy Awards, a nomination seems likely when the actress’ film also performs well at the ceremony (Sandra Hüller’s win for Anatomy of a Fall and Olivia Colman’s for The Favourite stand out). After being honored with wins from the New York Film Critics Circle last week, Flow and No Other Land also continued their dominance in the Animated and Documentary Feature categories.

Wim Wenders received the European Lifetime Achievement award in recognition of his outstanding body of work, his ever-present sense of curiosity, and his contributions to cinema throughout his career. In other special honors and awards, actress and filmmaker Isabella Rossellini received the award for European Achievement in World Cinema for her impressive work across the industry. Macedonian producer and actress, Labina Mitevska received the Eurimages International Co-production Award to mark her outstanding commitment to co-production and co-producing partnerships.
