2024 Oscar Shortlists: ‘Barbie,’ ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ ‘Society of the Snow’ Lead Mentions

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced shortlists in 10 categories for the 96th Academy Awards – Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound and Visual Effects.

Barbie leads the way with five mentions, including three in Original Song. The $1.5B blockbuster ended up on the shortlists for Original Score, Sound and Original Song, where it placed all three of its submitted numbers, “Dance the Night,” “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?” A film can only earn two song nominations at the Oscars so voters will have to choose wisely.

Killers of the Flower Moon and Society of the Snow were next with four mention apiece, including score. The Color Purple, Oppenheimer, Napoleon, Poor Things, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Zone of Interest all earned three.

A few notable misses include Nyad in score, makeup and visual effects, Jack Black’s “Peaches” from The Super Mario Bros. Movie in song – as well as The Little Mermaid and Wonka both missing – plus Kokomo City in doc feature, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in makeup.

Oscar nomination voting opens January 11, 2024 and closes January 16. Nominations will be announced on January 23 and the 96th Academy Awards will be held on March 10.

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE FILM
Fifteen films will advance in the Documentary Feature Film category for the 96th Academy Awards.  One hundred sixty-seven films were eligible in the category.  Members of the Documentary Branch vote to determine the shortlist and the nominees.

Fifteen films will advance to the next round of voting in the International Feature Film category for the 96th Academy Awards.  Films from 88 countries and regions were eligible in the category.

Academy members from all branches were invited to participate in the preliminary round of voting and must have met a minimum viewing requirement to be eligible to vote in the category.

In the nominations round, Academy members from all branches are invited to opt in to participate and must view all 15 shortlisted films to vote.

In the nominations round, Academy members from all branches are invited to opt in to participate and must view all 15 shortlisted films to vote.
