If there’s one thing BAFTA’s going to do it’s throw a little bit of chaos right at the beginning of the real awards season and today’s longlists gave us some shocking snubs and additions, but also highlighted some of the frontrunners that have been there all along.
Emilia Pérez and Conclave lead the BAFTA longlists with 15 and 14 mentions, respectively, directly competing in nearly every below the line category. The four actresses that shared the Cannes Best Actress award last summer are all mentioned: Karla Sofía Gascón in lead and Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz all making the supporting actress cut, as well as Best Film and Best Director for Jacques Audiard. Its number ties Oppenheimer and All Quiet on the Western Front – both BAFTA Best Film winners – for the most longlist mentions. For Conclave, this is Edward Berger’s second run at a huge BAFTA total. Two years ago, his All Quiet on the Western Front dominated the shortlists, the nominations and wins, taking Best Film and Best Director, and going on to win four Oscars.
The Substance, The Brutalist and A Complete Unknown on appeared on 11 lists, Wicked and Dune: Part Two on 10 and Anora and Gladiator II on nine. All but Gladiator II are on the Best Film longlist. Ridley Scott’s blockbuster sequel also missed out on Best Director and Leading Actor, although Denzel Washington – who, despite being a two-time Oscar winner, has never been BAFTA-nominated before – did get a supporting actor mention.
Shocking snubs came in the form of Pablo Larraín’s Maria, starring Angelina Jolie and Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door, starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, getting completely locked out of any category. Danielle Deadwyler (The Piano Lesson) and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (Nickel Boys) also failed to secure a longlist spot in Supporting Actress (Nickel Boys received just one, Adapted Screenplay, The Piano Lesson was blanked) while room was made for Jamie Lee Curtis in The Last Showgirl while the film’s lead, Pamela Anderson, was not. The much-derided Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black earned three longlist mentions, including star Marisa Alba in Leading Actress.
Irish audience hit Kneecap, the Irish-language music biopic that will represent Ireland at the Oscars, landed seven longlist slots including Best Film. The Donald Trump in the 90s biopic The Apprentice appeared in six categories, including Best Film, Leading Actor for Sebastian Stan and Supporting Actor for Jeremy Strong. The Outrun, starring Saoirse Ronan, had largely been ignored so far this season but nabbed five spots, including Ronan for Leading Actress and Nora Fingscheidt in Best Director.
At the longlist stage, voters are required to have five men and five women represented before the final vote for nominations. This year’s male director lineup includes Audiard and Berger joined by Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, Sean Baker for Anora and Denis Villenueve for Dune: Part Two. Joining Fingscheidt for female directors are Coralie Fargeat for The Substance, Ellen Kuras for Lee, Alice Rohrwacher for La Chimera and Payal Kapadia for All We Imagine as Light.
