2025 Oscars: 145 Original Scores, 89 Original Songs Eligible for 97th Academy Awards
145 Original Scores and 89 Original Songs have made the first cut on their way to an Academy Award nomination but with one big omission.
As was noted in the new last week, Hans Zimmer’s score for Dune: Part Two was disqualified for using too much of the first film’s music cues and themes. Of the ruling the Academy said, “The score must not use more than 20 percent of pre-existing themes and music borrowed from previous scores in the franchise.”
The number is down slightly from last year’s totals, which saw 94 songs and 149 scores eligible. Voting on the shortlists for 15 songs and 20 scores (as well as other craft categories like sound plus the animated, international and documentary sections) are now being voted on by the music branch’s 403 members to come up with the shortlists to be revealed on December 17.
Nominations voting for the 97th Oscars begins January 8, 2025 with the nominees to be announced January 17.
Full list of eligible scores to come. The news was first reported exclusively by Variety.
